On a day that honours one of history’s most influential leaders, Nelson Mandela, entrepreneur Unaiza Suliman is challenging young people around the world to rethink what it truly means to make a difference. Observed annually on July 18, Mandela Day serves as a global reminder of the power of service. Established by the United Nations, the initiative encourages individuals to dedicate 67 minutes to helping others, symbolising Mandela’s 67 years of public service. Yet, Suliman believes that in 2025, the world needs more than participation it needs commitment. “Young people today have more access, more tools, and more influence than any generation before them,” Suliman says. “With that comes responsibility.”

She points out that while global connectivity has created unprecedented opportunities, it has also amplified global challenges from inequality to economic disparity making it essential for youth to step into leadership roles with intention. At the heart of Mandela Day is a simple philosophy: small actions can create meaningful change. Suliman reinforces this idea, but with a forward-looking perspective. “Consistency is what turns small actions into legacy,” she explains. “It’s not about what you do once it’s about what you choose to do repeatedly.” She encourages young people to start where they are whether by supporting local communities, mentoring peers, or using their skills to address real-world problems.

Suliman also speaks to a growing shift in how success is defined globally. Increasingly, impact and purpose are becoming just as important as financial achievement. “You don’t have to choose between success and service,” she says. “The most influential people in the world are those who have learned to align the two.” As millions around the world participate in Mandela Day today, Suliman’s message is both clear and urgent: the legacy of Mandela must be lived, not just remembered. “This day is a reminder of what is possible when one person commits to serving others,” she says. “Imagine what’s possible if an entire generation does the same.” With her growing influence and clear, purpose-driven message, Unaiza Suliman is emerging as a powerful voice for youth leadership on a global stage, advocating for a future where impact is not occasional, but intentional and ongoing.
